Laptop Slow? 10 Real Causes and How to Fix Each One

A slow laptop is almost never 'just old'. Here are the ten causes we find most often, how to test for each in a few minutes, and what actually fixes them.

"My laptop has become slow" is the most common thing customers tell us. It is also the vaguest, because the fix depends entirely on why it is slow. A machine waiting on a dying hard drive needs a completely different answer from one that is simply throttling because of dust.

Work through this list in order. Each entry tells you how to test for it and what actually fixes it.

1. A failing mechanical hard drive

If your laptop still has a spinning hard disk (HDD), this is the most likely cause by a wide margin. A healthy HDD reads at roughly 80–120 MB/s. A failing one drops to 5–20 MB/s and the whole operating system stalls waiting for it.

Test: open Task Manager → Performance → Disk. If "Active time" sits at 100% while transfer rates stay under 10 MB/s, the drive is the bottleneck. You may also hear clicking or feel the laptop vibrate irregularly.

Fix: clone the drive to an SSD. This is the single biggest speed improvement available to most laptops — see how much faster an SSD actually is. If the drive is already failing, back up immediately; every hour of use costs data.

2. Not enough RAM

4 GB is not enough for a modern browser. Chrome with fifteen tabs alone can use 3 GB. When RAM runs out, Windows swaps data to disk, and everything crawls.

Test: Task Manager → Performance → Memory. If "In use" stays above 85% during normal work, and the "Committed" number exceeds physical RAM, you need more.

Fix: upgrade to 8 GB minimum, 16 GB if you edit video or run virtual machines. Most laptops from 2015 onward have a slot available. We cover the details on our upgrade page.

3. Malware and unwanted background programs

Adware and "system optimiser" toolbars are still everywhere, and they consume CPU continuously. Cryptocurrency miners are worse — they run your processor at full load whenever you are not looking.

Test: Task Manager sorted by CPU. If an unfamiliar process sits high with no window open, search its name before deleting anything. Also check Add/Remove Programs for anything you did not install.

Fix: a full offline scan, not just a quick one. Some threats hide from a running system, which is why virus removal uses a boot-time scan rather than a normal one.

4. Overheating and thermal throttling

When a CPU reaches about 95 °C it protects itself by dropping to a fraction of its speed. The laptop is not broken — it is being deliberately slowed down.

Test: a temperature tool such as HWiNFO. Idle should be 40–55 °C; under load 70–85 °C is normal. Sustained 95 °C+ with the fan screaming is the problem. Notice whether the slowness appears only after ten minutes of use.

Fix: clean the fan and heatsink, replace dried thermal paste, and use the machine on a hard surface. Full detail in our overheating guide.

5. Startup bloat

Every program that launches at boot competes for the first two minutes of CPU and disk time. Twenty of them turn a cold start into a five-minute wait.

Test: Task Manager → Startup apps. Check the "Startup impact" column.

Fix: disable everything you do not need in the first minute of use — update checkers, launchers, cloud clients. Keep your antivirus. This costs nothing and often recovers half the boot time.

6. The drive is nearly full

Windows needs free space for the page file and for updates. Below about 10% free, performance drops measurably.

Test: check free space on the system drive.

Fix: run Disk Cleanup including "Clean up system files", remove the old Windows installation, and move media libraries to an external drive. Aim for 15–20% free.

7. Windows has never been reinstalled

A three-year-old Windows installation has accumulated registry cruft, orphaned services and driver mismatches. Sometimes the honest answer is that a clean install is faster than any tuning.

Test: has it been more than three years, with heavy software installs and removals? Do the problems persist after the other nine items here are addressed?

8. A dying battery or wrong power plan

On battery, most laptops deliberately cap CPU speed. A worn battery can also force a "power saver" mode even when plugged in, because the charging circuit misreads its state.

Test: compare speed on battery versus plugged in. Check the power plan and the battery health report (powercfg /batteryreport).

Fix: set the plan to Balanced or High performance while plugged in, and replace a battery that reports under about 60% of its design capacity.

9. Driver problems, especially graphics

A generic Microsoft display driver gives you no hardware acceleration, so scrolling, video and window animations stutter.

Test: Device Manager — any yellow warning triangles? Is the display adapter listed as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"?

Fix: install the correct driver from the chipset vendor (Intel, NVIDIA, AMD), not from a driver-pack site.

10. Browser extensions and too many tabs

Browser extensions run in every tab and often on every page. A dozen of them is a measurable tax on a modest laptop.

Test: open the browser's task manager and compare memory per tab and per extension.

Fix: remove extensions you do not actively use, and enable the built-in tab-sleep feature.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my laptop suddenly so slow?

Sudden slowness usually points to one specific change: a failing hard drive, malware, a background process, or overheating. Gradual slowness over months is normally RAM, a full disk or accumulated software.

Will more RAM speed up my laptop?

It removes stalling when you have many programs or browser tabs open. It will not make a single program compute faster. If RAM usage is under 70% during your normal work, RAM is not your bottleneck.

Does deleting files make a laptop faster?

Only if the drive was nearly full. Below about 10% free space, performance drops. Otherwise deleting files frees space but does not increase speed.

Is a factory reset the same as a Windows reinstall?

Similar effect, but a proper clean install from Microsoft's own media gives a cleaner result and lets you keep your data on a separate partition.

How do I check if my hard drive is failing?

Task Manager showing 100% disk active time with tiny transfer rates is the classic sign. A SMART health check confirms it. Clicking or grinding noises mean back up now.
