MS Office Installation: A Guide Plus the Errors Everyone Hits

Microsoft Office is one of the most-installed pieces of software in the world, which is why its failure modes are so well documented. If the installer stops, the cause is almost always one of five things.

2. The install process, done properly

1. Remove every previous Microsoft Office installation. This is the step that prevents most errors.
2. Sign in to your Microsoft account at the official site and download the installer for your subscription or key.
3. Close every open Office application, browser and Outlook window.
4. Right-click the installer → Run as administrator.
5. Let it run without interruption. Do not sleep the machine.
6. Open any Office app, sign in, and confirm activation under File → Account.
7. Run Windows Update — Office relies on an updated .NET and WebView2 runtime.

3. "We couldn't install Office" / error 0x80070005

Cause: an older Office installation, a leftover registry entry, or a permissions problem with the installation folder.

Fix: download Microsoft's Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) and run its Office removal option. It clears the remnants that a normal uninstall leaves behind, which is precisely what blocks a fresh install.

4. "Unlicensed product" or activation fails

Work through these in order:

1. Check the internet connection — activation needs it, at least once.
2. Sign out of all Microsoft accounts and sign in with the account that holds the licence.
3. File → Account → Update Licence.
4. Check that the number of installed devices does not exceed the licence count.
5. Run SaRA's Office activation troubleshooter, which resolves most account-mismatch cases.

5. Office installs but apps crash on opening

Cause: missing or corrupted runtime components, or a conflict with an add-on.

Fix:

• Install the latest .NET and WebView2 runtimes from Microsoft.
• Start the app in Safe Mode (Ctrl + click the icon) to confirm an add-in is at fault, then disable add-ins.
• Run Office Repair — Settings → Apps → Microsoft 365 → Modify → Quick Repair, then Online Repair if the quick one fails.

6. Outlook will not connect or is extremely slow

Outlook is the most fragile Office component, largely because of the size of the mailbox file.

• Rebuild the profile — Control Panel → Mail → Show Profiles → New.
• Check the OST file size. Outlook files beyond about 30–40 GB slow down noticeably. Archiving old mail helps.
• Cache setting. Reducing the cached mail period from "All" to 12 months improves speed significantly on slower machines.
• Search index — rebuild it from Indexing Options if search is the slow part.

7. Office updates keep failing

1. Check that the machine has free space — updates need several gigabytes.
2. Disable the metered-connection setting; Windows will not download Office updates over a metered link.
3. Run Windows Update to completion first — Office updates depend on current system components.
4. If it persists, do an Online Repair, which reinstalls the current version and repairs the update channel.

8. Making Office usable on a modest laptop

• Turn off hardware graphics acceleration in Excel and PowerPoint options if you see flickering or lag.
• Keep fewer large worksheets open at once.

9. Getting productive in Office

Installing Office is the easy part. Most people use perhaps ten per cent of Word and Excel, and the missing skills — formulas, functions, pivot tables, mail merge, formatting and printing properly — are what actually save hours every week.
