"The internet is slow" is almost never one problem. It is usually one of four: the connection is not what you are paying for, the WiFi signal is weak where you sit, the channel is congested, or one old device is dragging the whole network down.
Work through these in order — each test tells you whether to continue or stop.
1. Test the connection at the source
Connect a laptop to the router with a LAN cable and run a speed test. Compare the result with the speed on your plan.

2. Use the right band: 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz
Almost every modern router broadcasts two networks. They are not interchangeable.

A device sitting in the next room holding onto 2.4 GHz is a very common cause of "slow WiFi". Switch it to the 5 GHz network and the speed often doubles or triples with no hardware change.
3. Router placement — free speed
Radio waves follow simple physics, and most routers are placed badly:
- Central and high. A router in a corner serves that corner and half of one room badly.
- Off the floor and out of cabinets. Metal, concrete and even a wooden cabinet full of wires block signal.
- Away from other electronics. Microwaves, cordless phone bases and large TVs interfere, especially on 2.4 GHz.
- Antennas vertical for a single-floor layout. A mixed angle helps multi-floor buildings.
Moving a router from a far corner to a central hallway is frequently worth more than buying new hardware.
4. Change the channel
On 2.4 GHz there are effectively only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6 and 11. In an apartment building, everyone defaults to the same one and they all interfere.
- Install a WiFi analyser app on a phone.
- See which channels your neighbours' networks occupy.
- Log into the router and set the 2.4 GHz channel to the least crowded of 1, 6 or 11.
- Leave the 5 GHz channel on "Auto" — it has far more room and auto usually works well.
Also check the channel width: 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz in a crowded area usually performs worse than 20 MHz, because it overlaps more neighbours.
5. Fixing coverage in a large house or office
One router cannot cover a three-storey building through concrete. The options, in order of quality:

6. Find the device that is slowing everything
One backup running, one 4K stream, or one device with a stuck download can saturate a connection and make every other device feel broken.
- Log into the router and look for devices consuming bandwidth in real time.
- Check phones and tablets for cloud backup jobs, photo sync and automatic app updates.
- Check whether any Windows machine is downloading a large update.
- Look at whether a device on the network is infected — a compromised device sending traffic outward degrades the whole connection. Our malware removal guide covers this.
7. Secure it properly
A slow network is sometimes an abused network — a neighbour using your WiFi, or worse, an infected device on it.
- Change the router admin password from the factory default. This is the most missed step in the country.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3. Never WEP, and never an open network.
- Use a long passphrase. Length beats complexity.
- Turn off WPS.
- Turn off remote administration and UPnP unless something specifically needs them.
- Keep the router firmware updated, and if the ISP-supplied router is more than about five years old, ask for a newer one or buy your own.
8. Two more things worth trying
- Change DNS. Slow name resolution makes browsing feel slow even on a fast line. Try a public resolver and compare page load times.
- Update the WiFi adapter driver. An old laptop driver can cap you at 802.11n speeds on a network that supports much more. Our slow laptop guide covers driver checks.
9. Setting up a small office network
For a shop, office or home with several computers, plan it rather than adding parts as problems appear:
- One router, plus wired access points where coverage is needed
- A gigabit switch for wired desktops and printers — cabling beats WiFi for stationary machines, always
- A guest network for visitors, kept separate from computers holding business data
- Shared printer configured as a network printer, not shared from one PC that must stay on
- A UPS on the router and switch so brief outages do not drop everyone

That is a coverage problem, not a speed problem. Move the router centrally and off the floor, switch devices to the 5 GHz band where possible, and add a wired access point or mesh node for distant rooms.
Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?
Use 5 GHz for anything in the same room or one wall away — it is much faster and less congested. Use 2.4 GHz for far rooms, smart devices and CCTV, which need range and generally need little bandwidth.
Does a WiFi extender really work?
It extends coverage but roughly halves throughput and adds latency, because it must receive and retransmit on the same radio. A wired access point or a mesh system gives a much better result.
How do I stop neighbours using my WiFi?
Change the router admin password from the default, use WPA2 or WPA3 with a long passphrase, turn off WPS, and review the connected-device list for anything you do not recognise.
Why is my internet fast at night and slow in the evening?
That is congestion — either on your street's shared connection or on the 2.4 GHz band. Switching to 5 GHz helps wireless congestion at home; providers handle their own network.
